Becoming Vegetarian Toddler Don'ts

Vegetarians are individuals who live by eating vegetable products with or without milk & eggs, but avoiding the consumption of meat, poultry & seafood. Vegetarians who eat only plant foods is called Vegan, while vegetarians who eat plant foods, milk & other dairy products are called lacto vegetarian. Vegetarians who consume plant foods, dairy & eggs & other dairy products are called lacto ovo vegetarian. A quantity of the reasons why people pick to become vegetarians, among others because they need to live a healthy life, religion, concern for animals & the environment.

Survey in 1997 reported there was 1% of the U.S. population is vegetarian. This figure rose to two.5% in 2000 & two.8% in 2003. UK population are vegetarian in 1987 as much as 3%, rising  doubled in 1997 to three.4%. Newspoll survey in 2000 reported there were 2% of Australians are vegetarian & 18% of the population prefers vegetarian food, while in India in 2003 there were over 50% of the population is vegetarian.

The number of vegetarians who are listed on the Indonesia Vegetarian Society (IVS) in 1998 stood at about thousand people & increased to sixty thousand members in 2007. This figure represents a fraction of the actual number of vegetarians because vegetarians do not all sign up for membership. In Indonesia there's hundred child vegetarian where  a third live in Jakarta.

Nutritional intake Lower

Research on the growth & development of vegetarian kids was first performed by Hardinge in 1954 with a large sample of 30 vegetarian kids aged 13-17 years. The design study is a cross-sectional study to evaluate the nutritional status based on anthropometric indices. Hardinge reports that the growth of lacto ovo vegetarian kids are similar to non-vegetarian groups of kids the same age, while vegan kids have smaller body weight (BW / U) & height (TB / U) is lower than non-vegetarian groups of kids the same age .

Less energy & protein is a factor that affects the nutritional status of kids. Infectious diseases to be the direct cause of the occurrence of malnutrition among kids under than less nutrient intake. Child is of the groups who are vulnerable to malnutrition so it is not recommended to be vegetarian.

The results of the study in England showed that vegetarian preschool kids (one.5 to two.5 years) have the energy intake of protein & overweight, cholesterol, niacin, sodium, & serum ferritin lower than non-vegetarian kids, but higher intake of carbohydrates , vitamin A, C, E & potassium, as well as substance Fe, Zinc & B12. Vegan kids compared to kids who eat meat, will tend to be shorter (TB / U) & narrow (BB / TB) as well as the risk for deficiency of nutrients essential for growth. Research in India, Britain & the United States proves that vegan groups & other types of vegetarians suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency.

Given a child is of the groups who are vulnerable to malnutrition & are in a period of quick growth that will affect the nutritional status of the next phase of life, as well as theoretically vegetarian toddlers is not recommended because it feared would suffer from malnutrition.

Factor of parental schooling, indirectly affects the nutritional status of kids, where low schooling became of the causes of nutrition issues. Maternal nutritional knowledge is also shown to be associated with nutritional status of kids. Families of kids with a maximum of people have kids with better nutritional status than the families of over kids.

Nutritional counselling needed to be negative impact over nutrition & obesity in toddlers by government authorities. Further research can be done with the design of case control or cohort longitudinally to study the growth & development of vegetarian toddlers.
