New Cell Phone Application Helps Avoid Skin Cancer

Australians are enjoying the summer sunshine now, and know when to close the skin and avoid potential skin cancer caused by ultraviolet light.

Thank you for the new iPhone apps!

Australia is one country with the highest skin cancer rates in the world, with over 1850 people die from it each year, higher than the death rate due to road accidents, according to the Cancer Council of Australia.

Two out of three Australians didiaknosis skin cancer at the age of 70 years.

"What we found is that many people using the temperature and weather to predict when they need a protector (avoid) the sun, but it's ultraviolet (UV) problem - and you can not see it or feel it," said Sue Heward, manager of Sun Smart at the Cancer Council.

To overcome this, also to reach out to young people who tend to be less stringent in protection from the sun, the council developed a free application that provides daily weather forecasts, including the maximum UV level.

This application has the function alert (warning) and using the global positioning systems (GPS0 to automatically adjust to the user's location, indicating the time when sun protection is needed - as a warning (warning) Automatic UV - and UV level guidelines.

"The nice thing about these applications is a device in your pocket, you do not have to go to your computer or open the paper to check," Heward said, stressing that this makes it very useful especially for people who work outdoors for long periods and very risky.

SunSmart application is available free for download.

Council has also devised a web widget UV Alert is for organizations, such as sporting clubs, reported Reuters.
